Description
Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) is a wearable sensor that measures interstitial glucose every few minutes and translates it into a continuous trend line. It doesn’t replace lab testing, but it can be a powerful “feedback loop” for understanding how meals, sleep, stress, training, and recovery affect glucose patterns in real life.
What CGM is (and isn’t)
CGM measures glucose in the fluid between cells, which typically lags behind blood glucose by several minutes—especially during rapid rises or falls (after meals or intense exercise). That’s why CGM is best used for patterns and trends, not perfection on a single reading.
What to pay attention to
Time in range: how often glucose stays in a healthy band (device/app dependent).
Spikes after meals: how high you go and how long it takes to return to baseline.
Overnight glucose: often reflects baseline metabolic stability and late eating/alcohol.
Variability: large swings can be a sign of higher glycemic load, stress, poor sleep, or illness.
Common drivers of higher readings
High-carb or low-fiber meals, poor sleep, acute stress, illness, and sedentary days can all raise glucose or increase variability. Resistance training and post-meal walking often flatten spikes. For many people, the same meal can look different depending on sleep and stress.
